On Saturday, May 31st from 11:00-2:00, Oldham County Public Library in La Grange is hosting a kickoff event for their Kindergarten Countdown Summer Reading Program. They have planned many engaging activities for young learners throughout the summer, including several parent informational sessions to help support early literacy development for incoming kindergarten students. This event will also offer information for older readers, too! The Summer Reading Kick-Off is sure to be a hit for all! I look forward to seeing you on this exciting day! Two sessions have recently been held to share 7 simple strategies for parents to use in supporting their incoming kindergartener. Parents were guided through a short slide show including researched-based information, led through interactive activities, and left with take-home goodies for their child to enjoy. Parents of our newest students got to know one another and learn about the special gifts each child will bring to Buckner. Here are a few quotes from parents who attended the previously held sessions.
"The best part of the session was: I enjoyed meeting the other parents and hearing about their incoming student. I enjoyed the evidence based practices and hearing about the school’s approach to literacy. The book and build a book was very generous and put to good use at our house." "The best part was: Knowing there are easy ways to increase vocabulary and word recognition, which lead to stronger reading skills as well. I also was not aware of the strong correlation between rhyming and reading, or of the midline crossover. It was nice to learn new, practical skills, which can easily be incorporated into our lives." Please join us for another session on May 8th. Simply access the informational flyer on this site and email to me (Sarah Whitt), or drop it off at our school office. Thanks to all who attended and we look forward to meeting more of you! |
