Last week, our youngest Buckner Bears spent time discussing and the famous fine art of Rivera and Whistler.. Upon concluding these brief, but powerful conversations, students selected the one painting they liked the best and shared their opinions in writing. Check out the amazing artwork and writing from our 4,5 & 6 year olds!

My son, Keaton, with Tyler Whitesides last year when he visited Barnes & Noble last fall. He couldn't read these books fast enough!
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 8:05 am until 8:50 am -- we are having a visiting author come to Buckner to speak to 4th and 5th grades! His name is Tyler Whitesides, and he will be here discussing the writing process and his books -- this was arranged through Barnes and Noble, and he is free! He is similar to the author we had last spring, Chad Morris. Here is a link to his website: http://www.tylerwhitesides.com/#/home Check him out! If you have not had a chance to preorder your copies of his books, please download the form from the Wednesday folder email. It's as easy as a quick click. We can't wait to hear all the BUZZ about Tyler Whitesides! -J.Dolan, LMS, Buckner Writer of the Month Contest- This is a monthly contest that all students at Buckner are encouraged to enter. Since everyone is a writer (picture, word, or sentence) everyone can choose the one writing publication they are most proud of to enter for the month's judging. News Flash: This year we will have several of our fifth graders selecting winners. These writing lovers and eager students will read each and every entry for a particular grade level and search for the three best. Those amazing writers will notice their names announced on Newscast, see their writing on the bulletin board across from the office, and find a special, shiny, silver Writer of the Month pencil in their hand. Another new addition for this year will be the showcasing of the winners' writing on this blog. All students who enter each month (regardless of whether they win or not) will be awarded a Writer of the Year certificate in May. There is really no reason NOT to enter and share great writing with a bigger audience!
So, when does this great opportunity start? Our first contest begins on September 20th! Ask your writer if he or she is ready! We certainly are! Buckner Buzz: Maybe you saw it, maybe you didn't but this year... you will! I'm talking about the "Written By Students, Read By Students" school newspaper. We are in the process of gathering our staff of 4th and 5th grade writers to start spreading the news important to our students kindergarten through fifth grades. The first issue ought to be in your child's hand or available to you via the Internet before mid-October. Please be sure to check it out. It's certainly something so buzz about. ;) |
